Word documents can sometimes seem like an inevitability of modern business, but at least one person things that doesn't have to be so. Research scientist Tristan Miller has put together a page called
Please don't send me Microsoft Word documents that explains to would-be attachment-senders why Word is a bad format to send to your colleagues and what alternatives there are. Though I'm sure some readers won't agree with everything he says, and some businesspeople won't buy a word of it (or just not care), if you hate getting Word files it's a handy link to give to their senders.

I like sending PDF documents a lot especially if I'm sending out some financial report that I've worked awhile on. At least I know no one can go in and fudge the numbers.

Not sure I understand Debra's objections -- PDF is an excellent replacement for Word, and nowadays it's easy to generate one for free. HTML is a little trickier, since it's hard to keep the formatting as nice.
Now if I could get people to stop sending me 10 MB attachments.
