Hits:
1. Sidebar and gadgets: screen space hogging side bar and resource hogging gadgets: the age of clocks, calculators and weather applets is a coming.
2. Pretty Aero interface: I want my gui to be unintrusive, invisible, undistracting. The only breakthrough in GUI by microsoft was the animation when the window is minimized and Cleartype font smoothing. everything else is fluff that forces me to turn it off (smooth scrolling? animated combo? they watch too many movies where text is displayed at 5 chars/sec with the annoying chirping sounds)
3. Media Center integration: I already have a tv. I already watch too much TV.
4. Windows Media Player 11: Version 11 of the same thing? Will this one be more stable? no. Will it be easy to use? no. Will it have a frustrating interface? yes...
5. Non-intrusive DRM: also available: comfortable anal probe, tax you enjoy paying, healthy trans fat. However much spin you put on describing something _designed_ to thwart you, it's still designed to thwart you.
6. Flip 3D task switcher: see #2. unneeded eye candy. OS needs to be fast and invisible. Needs to run my apps reliably and get out of my way.
Misses:
1. Installation problems: come back when the product ships. It's beta. Back in the days, I installed linux kernel 1.x from floppies on my 486, THAT has install problems!
2. Lousy performance: come back when the product ships. What's wrong with this guy? The beta code is loaded with debug info, has a huge memory footprint and is not optimized one bit.
3. Bad Search and security behaviors: it's been ages since I gave up searching with explorer. It's always sucked and I don't see why it should be different here.
4. Steep memory requirements for Aero: I remember when MS was claiming they were optimizing Windows 95 to run "well" with just 4MB of ram. At least they are more realistic now. Also, nobody is twisting your arm to enable resource hogging, crash prone transparent boder aero interface. Your program will still run with the plain looking one. Guaranteed.
