I haven't tried it out to see if it works yet, but it looks promising:
User Profile Hive Cleanup Service is a free utility from Microsoft that's supposed to speed up Windows XP shutdown times considerably. The article at IntelliAdmin says the biggest culprit for slow shutdowns "is a problem unloading the current user's profile," and what the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service does is in the background and cleans up user profiles automatically. I'm not convinced that it will reduce my ~1.5 minute shutdowns to a few seconds, but every little bit helps. Oh, and FYI, after you've installed the app you'll have to reboot once before it will kick in.

Umm.. Microsoft released this download? Where's the link? Call me paranoid, but my virus/trojan/spyware/malware/badware alarm went off as soon as I saw the file was being host on the writer's own server.

is there a way to uninsyall it afterwards?
Jordan RunningJul 5th 2006 9:22PM
Yes, K, you can uninstall it just like most programs with Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
Mark: Thanks for the link.

I can't tell a difference. However, after installing, it did not ask me to reboot. So I dunno...

1.5 minutes?! Well, you're champion. My shutdown continues maximum for 30 second. I don't want to install this program. My shutdown is slowed down by programs, which are closing when I press "shutdown". And about Microsoft: I opened readme.txt file and what I see?!

No word about Microsoft

This made a huge difference on my laptop. It used to take 5+ mins to shut down now it takes 1-2 mins. Kudos to this free download.

"It used to take 5+ mins to shut down"
Wow sounds like lots of other bad stuff going on there or maybe you just have a lot of CRAP on there, either way 5 mins to Shutdown is very bad, its bad for startup as well but thats horrible for shutdown...2 mins is still bad.
Me on a bad day 30secs to shutdown
Good Day 15secs to shutdown

What's this "shutting dow" thing you guys speak of?
/Last time my computer was off was due to a power outage

I followed this tip from digg too, and boy did I regret it. Blue screen on restart (something like bad_header_data?!), had to use safe mode to remove it. Doesn't do that much for the headache caused.

Im with you Wedge.. What is shuting down.. LOL..
Actually I tend to almost never shutdown, part is due to the fact that my MOBO needs its BIOS updated and Ive been just too busy to take the time.. (it forgets my drive config almost all the time, have to boot to BIOS when starting from an Off state)

Why not hibernate if you need to shut down - seems faster to me on my laptop with XP.
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=hibernate+windows+xp&spell=1
On why you might want to shut down or hybernate - seems obvious to me - save energy, money and reduce your contribution to greenhouse gases.

This thing caused a BSOD and hosed my computer until i could uninstall it. Running WinXP -- be WARNED...

Haha! Only 5 mins? I'm a computer technicion, and the worst I've seen was 12mins. Yeah, insane. Slow shutdowns are often caused by slow processors and not much ram. This 12min was on a P133 with 96 megs of ram. How did it get on there, you might ask, since Windows blocks you from installing XP on anything less than a 400. Well, it HAD a 450 in it, with 256 ram. (It was a P2, but they found one of those crazy slot -> socket converters) They stripped it to feed their friends computer. And they brought it in because it was too slow.... I hate people.
