As someone who usually has nine or ten Firefox tabs open in addition to Trillian in the corner and occasional Gmail Notifier pop-ups, I'm probably not the kind of writer
WriteRoom is made for. WriteRoom is "a full screen, distraction free, writing environment" for Mac OS X. It takes simplicity to the extreme, presenting you with essentially nothing but what you've written, and allowing you to do little else but write. WriteRoom auto-saves as you write so you don't even have to worry about that.
WriteRoom is a free download from Hog Bay Software.

A Windows port of this would be awesome for those of us who do creative writing. My muse is often interrupted by the blasted infernal trappings of "other stuff" on this computer.

Here's a quick hack to emulate WriteRoom on Windows using Microsoft Word.

Like the Word hack. The only improvement to WriteRoom would be amber instead of green-- easier on my VT100 terminal.

Dark Room is a rather good windows version of WriteRoom. I've been using it and I've grown quite fond of it. Requires microsoft's .Net 2.0 framework though. Here's the link: http://they.misled.us/archives/501

A few months back download squad posted a link to Word for DOS available for a free download. http://www.downloadsquad.com/2005/11/25/free-file/
It seems to me that not even having the internet on your writing machine while writing might be a good thing.

I just downloaded DarkRoom. It's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure I get the point for writers. A word processor of your choice used in full screen mode will work as well, and you'll be able to format and spell check.
Jordan RunningJul 3rd 2006 3:25PM
That's just the point, Debra: Things like formatting and spell check are distractions that get in the way of what you're supposed to be doing--writing.

There is also a very good Windows option to this program called the WestEdit text editor.
It can be found at http://home.online.no/~westerma/WestEdit/
