Favicon Picker for Firefox
When I first came across Favicon Picker, an extension for Firefox, I didn't really see the utility of it. It took Rachel Cunliffe at cre8d blog to set me straight. The real reason Favicon Picker is fantastic is that it lets you do away entirely with text labels in Firefox's Links toolbar (if you want), as in the screenshot above, and it lets you assign favicons to bookmarklets. Not only does that each one a lot easier to pick out at a glance, it also makes room for a lot more of them. Excellent.

THANK YOU THANK YOU. By far one of the most annoying things of Firefox was the inability to manually select Favicons. Even IE has this functionality.

You can also remove the text by right-clicking on the icon > Properties > leaving the "Name" field blank.

Is there a version that's less than a year old?
How can I install that xpi?

Bruce: The version linked, 0.3, is about eight months old and works fine with the latest version of Firefox You can install the .xpi by saving it to your hard drive and then dragging it onto the Extensions window (Tools > Extensions) in Firefox.

This is a great extension (especially for people like me who have an unending list of bookmarks)! However, I can't use icons that exceed a certain file size (haven't found out what it is yet, but I think the maximum could be between 12 KB to 16 KB). Maybe the author should do some editing...
