Firefox 2.0 alpha 2 released
Mozilla has released a 2nd alpha version of Firefox 2.0. As usual, this release is not recommended for any kind of serious use, but if you're salivating at some of the new version's features, check out what has been incorporated in this 2nd development milestone:- Links default to opening in new tabs, not new windows
- Close buttons now appear on every tab, and the close behavior is slightly different
- Inline spell checking in text boxes (Works well, though apparently not on all sites yet)
- Automatic restoration of your browsing session if there is a crash
- Search suggestions now appear in the search box auto-complete for Google and Yahoo!
- New search plugin manager for removing and re-ordering search engines
- Improved support for previewing and subscribing to web feeds
- New microsummaries feature for bookmarks (Really interesting new feature)
- New Add-Ons manager improves the user interface for managing extensions and themes
- Updates to the extension system to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions
- New search service that supports Sherlock and OpenSearch engines
- Support for SVG text using svg:textPath

Is it just me or are they taking some of the features of the most popular extensions, namely Tab Browser Preferences, Customise Google and SpellBound? Its admirable that they are effectively reponding to market demands but this will surely cause chaos in the extension developer community. Especially if the new release only implements some of the extensions functionality, as is the case with auto-suggest and customise Google.

My FX browser already does those things - With extensions.
Why would someone be salivating to download this?

Sweet. Definetly looking forward to the 2.0 release. The micro descriptions sound great. I'll probably just wait for the final release before downloading it.

"Is it just me or are they taking some of the features of the most popular extensions". Actually they're taking some of the features from other browsers: "Links default to opening in new tabs, not new windows", "Close buttons now appear on every tab.." (Opera, Maxthon).
I would switch to Firefox if they could solve those memory leaks and also if they would implement other cannot-live-without features from Maxthon (i.e. super drag-and-drop).

Not bad and I am sure Firefox has a good future but I am putting my vote for Opera still as I work with a net connection of 5-6 KBPS, Opera works best for me. I have FireFox 2.0 but I rarely use it.

Firefox has is improving more and more with each release. I never have noticed the memory problem and I have not looked. I tend to have machines with over a GB of RAM so monitoring usage is not high on my scale at this point since I seem to only rarely cros the 50% barrier.
As far as integrating extensions, I think the person would be flattered. It also could lead to the person makign the extension even better than what is built into Firefox. I do understand the possible alienation of soem who will be annoyed, but is not sweeter to beat big brother (Firefox developers) with a better product (better extension than included functionality)?
