
The party line boom was a bit before my time, but
Skype seems poised to update the concept for the digital age with
Skypecasts, which are now being previewed in the newest beta version of
Skype. The
Skype beta blog
decribes Skypecasts as "live, moderated conversations allowing groups of up to 100 people from anywhere in the
world to talk to one another." The "moderated" part seems to be key, allowing a "host" to
"mute, eject or pass the virtual microphone to participants when they wish to speak." Participating in a
Skypecast is free, but you'll have to
download
Skype 2.5 Beta, which is Windows-only.
