The name of this app is SExI-FS, which is really
Spatially Explicit Individual-based Forest
Simulator. Sounds kinda racy, doesn't it? Well relax, the only one getting action with SExI-FS would be an
Ent. I can't really do the explanation justice, so I'll just
quote the website: "The SExI Forest Simulator focuses on tree-tree interactions in a mixed
multi-species agroforest. The high level of structural complexity of such traditional agroforestry
systems defies classical forestry approaches when it comes to optimizing management
practices. To cope with this complexity, farmers have adopted a tree-by-tree management approach, which
is closer to gardening than to any usual tropical forestry or estate crop management
model. Individual tree care and regular tending takes the form of seedlings transplanting, selective
cleaning and felling, adjusted harvesting intensity." It's a lot more fun than it sounds, but
you'll have to quickly register with
ICRAF to download (why?). It's
free, and a Java app. Still, it doesn't beat actually going outside and enjoying the real thing...
