The
Theremin bridges the gap between geek toy and nerdy musical
instrument. I remember seeing Angelo Moore rock a Theremin in the 90's, and it was great fun. If you want to play with
a Theremin, but just can't seem to bother with
building one,
there are a few software solutions. One of the most fun is for the PocketPC called
Pocket Clanger. Instead of waving your arms around,
you move the stylus. There's a cutesy
Flash-based
Theremin for Macs and PC's, but don't expect it to work quite as well... And then there's a very cool
webcam-based Virtual Theremin. That one allows you to really work
like a Theremin artist should: by waving your arms around like a heavily sedated maniac. Find even more Theremin
software tools at
Theremin World, naturally.
