According to a study done by Forrester
Research, widespread consumer distrust of Microsoft
could lead to massive defections that could help
Apple double its PC market share. In the study, which was done before Apple's switch to Intel, 5.4 million
households gave Microsoft a rating of "mistrust a lot" or "mistrust a bit," and Forrester says that
"compared with all Microsoft users, these at-risk users have higher income, are much more likely to be male and are
bigger online spenders. These households know they run Microsoft software but would be just as happy to leave it
behind—if they could." These users "affluent, optimistic about technology and brand aware,"
fitting right in with Apple's user base.

How so? Apple users are just going to install XP or Vista anyhow. :p

I share the respondents' distrust of Microsoft. To this end I am majorly experimenting with open source software. OpenOffice seems to be a viable substitute for Microsoft Office, Firefox is superior to Internet Explorer, Thunderbird is better than Outlook Express. Google Calendar is an acceptable substitute for MS Outlook, etc.
In a similar vein, Gimp works as well as Photoshop, AVG Free is at least as good as Norton Antivirus, CCleaner is superior to the Norton registry cleaner, and on it goes.
What is really needed now is an open source operating system that will run the popular Windows applications.
I'm not sure how this helps Apple.

"Double" from 4% to 8%? I'm sure MS isn't losing any sleep over that. They should be more worried about Linux.

I thought this was downloadsquad, not comedysquad!
Apple's always had this hope, nice to see this joke surface again. See ya next year..
