How to use your ink cartridges until they're (really) empty
It's
no secret that the point at which a printer tells you your $40 ink cartridge is empty (and prompty stops letting you
print anything) has little relation to when it's actually empty, especially if you've refilled it yourself, and in the
spirit of letting you get the most out of the fortune you're spending on ink, here's some tips for Epson and HP owners:
SSC Service Utility is a free Windows app for Epson printers that lets
you freeze or reset your printer's internal ink counters to fool your printer into thinking the cartridge is full
again. For HP owners things aren't so simple. Methods vary by printer and cartridge type and many of them require
rolling up your sleeves and fiddling with the cartridge itself, but Mr. Ink Jet (an ink refill kit vendor) has some tips.[Via Boing Boing]

There is some danger with this if you tell the system the ink is full then run out. In the case of some HP printers that the cartridge actually feeds a smaller well that has the print head in it. When your ink cartridge is allowed to actually go dry it will all the head to go dry and you will be replacing those along with the ink cartridge. Been there, done that - not cheap!

I second the first person's post!
However, most Epson printheads are NOT USER REPLACABLE. You're much better off using $4 generic cartridges than you are using tools like this.

Why not transparent cartridge containers so we can see the amount of ink in the cartridge container?
