Awhile back Google started beta-testing
Gmail For Your Domain,
a hosted e-mail service that lets you use Gmail's slick webmail interface for e-mail addresses from your own domain
name. It's still a closed beta, but a blogger at Science Addiction managed to get his domain on the list (go
here to try for yourself) and has
written a review of the
service (if the site is down from
Slashdotting,
the author has a
mirror here). Beta
testers get 25 free 2GB e-mail accounts with all of Gmail's standard features including spam blocking and Gmail chat,
plus an easy administration panel, e-mail lists (i.e. alias addresses for whole groups of users), color scheme and logo
customization, and a few more bits and bobs. The author says that setting it up is painless and the experience is
satisfying. He also says that the interface hints that Gmail For Your Domain will include some form of paid service. No
word yet on when it will be available to the general public.

Thanks for the link- the "25 user accounts" info was only my experience; apparently, they give out more or less email addresses based on the information you provide them when you request the service. I'm pretty sure there will be a "value-added" paid service and other hosted services in the future, though.

Does anyone know whether email sent through a gmail hosted domain account will still show the gmail address in the "sent from" field? Also, unless they implement IMAP they will not get my business. As slick as the service is, IMAP is essential when emailing across many platforms (Home PC, work, treo etc.).

Bear: As far as I know, Gmail For Your Domain is completely agnostic when it comes to any @gmail.com account you might have--if your e-mail address is joe@example.com, you sign in with joe@example.com and e-mails sent will be from joe@example.com.

That's right (Jordan, tyler), GMail for your domain does not care if you have a GMail account or not.
