Back in the early days of blogging, setting up a shoutbox--that is, a constantly-scrolling sidebar where visitors
can leave comments and chat in real time--was a serious commitment, and most people who had them rolled their own in
whatever language was handy. That, of course, was before WordPress and before AJAX. Now if you want a shoutbox on your
WordPress blog, it's as easy as installing the
AJAX Shoutbox plugin by
Andrew Sutherland. Of course, there are other ways to get the job done, in particular a pile of third-party services
that'll let you embed some of their JavaScript on any page, but there's nothing quite like being in charge of your own
data and Sutherland's AJAX Shoutbox is pretty slick.

My search for a wordpress widget that uses this plugin turned up this page, so I thought if someone else was searching for a widget, they could find it here. Anyways, click on my name for my livejournal entry w/the code for a widget that wraps the shoutbox plugin. The formatting seems to ignored by LJ, but it should still work fine.
