A sneak peek at the Firefox 2.0 UI
"The default [user interface] of Firefox has not been altered since the launch of Firefox 1.0. It would be presumptuous to assume that the way in which users interact with their browsers has gone unchanged between that time and our planned 3Q2006 release date for [Firefox 2.0], and even more presumptuous for us to assume that we got things 100% right with Firefox 1.0." That's how Mozilla's Mike Beltzner starts a post to the Firefox development newsgroup in which he describes the changes he and his fellow developers have in mind for the next major release Firefox. In his post he includes an interesting (and kinda retro) ASCII mock-up that displays some of the proposed changes, like moving the Go, Reload and RSS buttons inside the URL bar to better show their relationship to the current page, moving the Home button and bookmarks search into the personal bookmark toolbar, and so on. Click the link for Beltzner's complete proposal and several pages of commentary from the Mozilla developer community.

Wow, I'm amazed at how well they were able to recreate Firefox's UI so well with just text. I'm thinking this would make a funny theme to show off to all your "l33t" friends.

If Firefox really wants to improve the way its UI illustrates the relationship between buttons, the URL bar and the tab they need to look at how Opera does it. The halfway house that Beltzner proposes here looks more likely to confuse than aid in understanding of the relationship between, say, 'Reload' and the URL. I mean, if the 'Go' button is in the URL bar because you want to 'go' to the URL why isn't the 'Back' button in there as well? Presumably you want to go 'back' to the next URL?

Why (and I'm asking because I don't know the answer) don't browsers have the various toolbars at the bottom of the page?
Why are they at the top? I scroll down, now I have to drag my mouse back to the top of the page to enter an url or click a tab. WHY NOT PUT IT ALL AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN? I'm serious? Anyone know?

it would help to have the "customise" system give us the freedom to add buttons to the statusbar, though i wont want it to be default. personally, i love as much screen space as possible, so i usually compress all the imp buttions into just two toolbars, the "file" ne and the "bookmarks" one.
I am kinda unimpressed by the firefox 2.0 proposed changes. Some of the stuff is already availiable via extensions...and the others really arent major enough. I dont particularly like the UI redesign either, it would only confuse people.

i kinda do what shadekh (5) does,
i make the address bar right next to the file menus and leave the rest of the screen to it, and the buttons or spread out on the bookmark bar and the status bar
i really dont want buttons to be in the address bar, addresses get long

certainly not revolutionary.
are they tring to emulate the functionality of the opera address bar or what? my ascii deciphering skills are poor at best.
