Yes, Webmonkey is still alive, and I found a neat little roundup of
10 Flickr mashups over there. Webmonkey treads the
line between total web n00b and the intermediate (maybe some advanced stuff a little), and this article is a wonderful
intro to mashups in general, and Flickr to an extent. If you have been trying to show someone how cool mashups are, or
what Flickr can do, it's a good thing to pass along. But the mashups themselves are great. You'll need the lastest
Flash player, so be aware of that. My favorite is
Captioner! which
allows you to put funny word balloons on Flickr images, and those captions are stored in a URL (not on the original
photo). Very clever, and lots of fun. Why didn't they spell it
Captionr though? Speaking of fun,
Retreivr is a lot of fun, partly because it doesn't really work right.
You sketch something, it finds pics that are similar to what you've doodled. Now, it's a clever idea, but obviously the
results are all over the map. I'm not saying it doesn't work at all, it's just funny to see what comes up, as it's not
always what you'd expect. And for you design folks, be sure to check out
Colr
Pickr. Wish I'd seen that last quarter... Finally, for the most intriguing game based on Flickr, look at
FlickrBall, a game where you start with some tags, and keep trying to
find related tags, ala six degrees of separation. It's sick and twisted, but quite entertaining. We've
mentioned Fastr before. Oh, and there's a
Flickr-based Sudoku, which I'm sure you'll enjoy (if
you dig Sudoku). So yeah, the Flickr API put to some nice uses. Way more fun than those stodgy Google/Yahoo map
mashups, right?
