Freeware alternatives for everything
A
moderator on the Neowin forums maintains an obsessive
list of freeware to get just about everything done, from 3D graphics and antivirus software to RSS readers and
video players. Need a free defrag program? Try DRMS or Buzzsaw. Want to run an FTP server? Try Cerberus. You get the
idea. Most of it is for Windows, though some is cross-platform. Definitely worth bookmarking.[Via Digg]

I have seen several great lists like this, but I get really disappointed when so many of these Windows programs aren't compatible with Windows XP 64-bit. It'd be real nice (here's a hint to anyone who wants to whip up a blog dedicated to this problem as it will only expand further when the next version of Windows is for sale), if someone could make a resource for all things 64-bit.

Nice, thanks for the link! The alt.comp.freeware newsgroup also maintains a similar, but more comprehensive listing of freeware at Pricelessware.org - if anybody's interested.

Thanks for the great list of freebies.
So many vendors do not have pricing listed on their websites and sometimes it is difficult to tell the free software from the super-expensive!
