Dvorak says Apple to ditch OS X for Windows
John C. Dvorak has made a career out of posing novel hypotheses and occasionally surprising everyone (including,
one supposes, himself) by striking gold with an accurate one. This time Dvorak says he's convinced that Apple is going
to ditch its much-loved Mac OS X and switch to Windows
for its shiny machines. He puts together a bit of evidence here and there, most especially Apple's recent Intel
switch, and argues that Apple has said all along that it's a hardware company and that it has seen the error in trying
to maintain its own OS. Dvorak postulates that since it's OS X's slick GUI that makes the Mac distinctive, Apple could
"preserve its slick cachet" by grafting an "executive software layer" on top of Windows to make it
feel more Mac-like. As Dvorak points out, the real trouble would be keeping the cult of Mac from rioting, but while he
thinks Jobs could smooth out any dissent among the Mac-faithful, I'm not so optimistic. So, what do you think? Is Dvorak talking crazy talk, or is he really on to something (or is there something altogether more sinister going on here)?

Let's be clear about one thing. Concerning "Microsoft not allowing Apple to mess with the GUI," if Microsoft could sell a few million more licenses of Windows it would allow Apple to do any damn thing it wanted to the GUI. We're not talking altering the code here, just the GUI and Microsoft wouldn't mind 50 different GUI's from every manufacturer possible as long as the underlying code is Windows (and each license is paid for!)

If you believe that I have a bridge I want to sell you.

This guy is a hater, i wouldn't even say crazy cuz he's just dumb.
MS would have to go *NiX to consider that stupid thought. And every so called arguments he's stating are not standing on any ground.
He's just trying to be the first one to predict something that might happen after he dies...

Once again Dvorak strikes gold. Apple is 3 years into the seven year plan of merging it's OS with Windows. It's a done deal people. This isn't hypothetical, it's been planned for sometime. Jobs will sell it and continue making his money.

I doubt Apple will become a Windows shop. Macs wouldn't sell for a premium price if they sported an OS as mediocre as XP. I can understand the euphoria of hackers trying to get XP running on Windows; but most Mac users aren't all that worked by by the "potential" that Windows will bring to the Mac.

It's strange this one. The majority of cultists shouldn't really care which engine is in their machine, or which fuel it runs on. So if it's all down to vanity, then a merger of the OS's would appear very obvious and likely otion because MS has some catching up to do, but are well on their way. If it is stability, a nice UI and functionalty people really want, then it will be the wisest way to go. I use both, and appreciate both for their +'s and dislike the -'s, so I'm between stools. Anything which improves and speeds up my work and play is a benefit for me, so forget the cultists. They are a minority anyway!

Has anyone worked with the Beta Vista? I have. It looks like a Mac OS X but windows style. It even functions much the same way. Why? I honestly feel that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates got together to say "Hey I'm switching to an Intel Chip, we are a hardware company you are an OS company lets make both our OS's look the same so if they boot between the 2 then they will have the same functionality. That way it provides a better usability experience." If this were the ultimate truth then both parties would win. Jobs would sell his hardware and Gates would be selling his software. Both companies win.
