LimeWire Pro - Today's Free File?
I put a question at the end of that title
because I'm not sure if this is really kosher or not. Let your conscience be your guide. It's pretty obvious that,
using p2p, you can get the Pro version of LimeWire (or
nearly any other app) for free. But using the GPL to allow for the pro version to download for free anyway? Pretty
obvious as well, since the pro version is open source, you could just download the source, compile it, and there ya go.
Maybe the folks at LimeWire should have considered the terms of the GPL before charging for their app... Or maybe not.
Seems like they have a right to earn a living making the application. Personally I don't like LimeWire, but most of my
students use it. So yeah, Webby's World has the details on acquiring LimeWire
Pro for free, along with a little jab at Java (which I'd agree with a commenter, is NOT generally buggy). Or you
could be brave and go to this freaky site where they claim you can just
download the thing for free. Free? Maybe. Guilt free? I'll let you decide.[Via digg]

If you want a p2p client that's free, guilt-free (besides the possible downloading of illegal files that is), and spyware/adware free, I suggest Shareaza. I thought Limewire had adware? I guess the pro version wouldn't in any case. Still I like Shareaza, because it can connect to users of several different clients and it has bittorrent support.

Yes, you can download from this website, BUT if they compiled it from source (which limewire does offer for free) they are breaking

Check out FROSTWIRE.com they made an open-source adware-free version of the Limewire software. It has all the features of Limewire Pro, and can enable you a Turbo-charged connection "Guilt-free".

Limewire is a very powerful p2p (gnutella) client- with a Turbo-charged connection enabled (available with the Pro version or Frostwire) you can download at the same rate as normal http downloads.
Unfortunately, as with any other p2p client it does a major flaw, it will take up a lot of your system resources. But it's still much better than the numerous flaws with the many other p2p clients I have personally tried.

I remember using Limewire way back, I replaced it with Freewire, which removed the ads from the standard (and I believe only) version available at the time. It was at a time where p2p clients like iMesh had enough spyware/adware to choke a T3 horse, so it was much apreciated.
Freewire link (now with slightly less guilt!):

I am unhappy with limewire . I signed up for and paid for limewire pro in november 2005 for a year . Then a newer version kept flashing at the bottom of my screen so I hit it . Long story short , I lost my initial program of lime wire which I thought was great! Now i have to put out more money to get it back , WHICH DISPLEASES ME GREATLY. I still have outstanding time owed to me .
please help................or loose my business.

Will someone PLEASE just view the GPL.
http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html
It's really not a difficult read.
It states as clear as day that a piece of software liscence under the GPL can be:
Sold at a *price* -- but whence sold that copy can be copied and redistributed freely. HENCE FREE.
The code can be redistributed, changed, distributed again and so forth. This is what free means.
So, now you know this. You know that any site can obtain the Limewire source code, compile it and distribute that compiled software freely. This is not the first (and isn't the last) piece of software to be compiled and given out by a different party. For example; X-Chat. It is free on Linux, but sold at a price on Windows. You can also obtain *COMPLETELY LEGAL* compiled copies for Windows by generous people who took the time to do so.
I had to say something, I've seen multiple blogs with incomplete definitions of *this-and-that-legal*.
So yeah, it's okay to download that free limewire version.
