Pandora
and
Last.fm are both services that purport to recommend music to you based on your
musical preferences, but in different ways. Pandora lets you pick a song and then recommends song with similar musical
qualities. Last.fm, on the other hand, recommends music based on the preferences of other people who like some of the
same music you do. Blogger Steve Krause used both Pandora and Last.fm for a few months and wrote a nice article on the
services' differences and similarities and
how good they really are at
recommending music. Ultimately Krause decided that both services are cool, but found "Last.fm better than
Pandora at delivering songs that I liked or at least didn't feel compelled to skip."

I love Last.fm. I admit I haven't tried the others, but so far I'm having a hoot with Last.fm.
@ Mark, Last.fm can recommend new music based on your entire listening profile, not just individual artists. You can also generate a "radio" station based on similar music to one or more artists you specify

Sure, last.fm is good for finding new music, but only based on one artist. Pandora lets you put multiple genres (artists) on one station and comes up with lots of good new songs as well, and you dont have to switch from station to station to listen to different kind of music, even though you can. I like both, but I listen to pandora more.

I have not tried LastFM...yet. But I love Pandora. I've already bought a couple of CDs (thru their Amazon link) of bands I had never heard of that Pandora played for me. Like Tift Merritt...never heard of her before, but man she is amazing! I need to try LastFM, but Pandora totally rocks me thru the workday.
