The Register is reporting that
Google has confirmed it's working on
Goobuntu, its own version of Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu is a popular distribution of Linux which aims for
user-friendliness, but Google is mum on what Goobuntu's purpose is. It could be they're readying in an end-user Windows
replacement, or Goobuntu might be intended for internal use only. As much as I'd like to see a Google OS (doubly so an
open source one), I'm gonna place my bets on the latter.

Well, google uses its own derivations of almost all linux flavors (redhat, debian, gentoo), so it is no surprise. However, it would be a surprise if goobuntu was meant as a replacement for windows for regular inadvanced computer users.

a Google/Ubuntu release would be great, but only if it came with their suite of current Windows programs ported over and, of course, solid integration to their web features (obviously something that be expected.) The only issue I'd see would be really nailing down the appearance to be consistent and clean, I'm on the fence about Ubuntu and using Gnome with it (Kubuntu exists, but the touchpad speed always feels off in it, despite my efforts.)
Also, not to nitpick, but shouldn't the post be filed under Linux/Google? Though that does raise an interesting idea of a cross-platform front-end that could provide pseudo-desktop features and applications through a virtual environment on OS X and Windows...
