Most of my Mac brethren have become accustomed to
QuickSilver, a keyboard app launcher (oh it does other things, many
wonderful other things). I used to use it before my piteous iBook succumbed to the monster known as "Tiger"
(I curse the day I ever heard of Dashboard). At any rate, I did so love QuickSilver, and have been on the lookout for a
PC replacement. So I stumbled upon
Rock-it, which looks like a pretty good
option. It's just an app launcher, but it does it well. So well I may never jump into my overburdened Programs folder
in the Start menu ever again. Because you shouldn't have to set your monitor to film res just to see all your
apps— which I had to do in the past...

Why not just type a few letters from the app you want to start into your Google Desktop floating toolbar. It works for me.

another alternative is launcher (my personal project)... although it has been around for a while, the latest releases are looking more promising (2.1 beta versions).
its designed to have similar functionality of launchbar and quicksilver for os x or appRocket for windows

App Rocket is another program extremely similar to Quicksilver. For Windows only, it's fast and efficient!

Yeah, or you can make your start menu usefull. Who says it needs to look like crap.. if its "overburdened" delete what you don't use! Categorize! My start menu is broken up into internet, programming, applications, and games then under each folder is only programs I use. This, coupled with the quicklaunch toolbar (again, put what YOU want in there) is all I need to launch apps

Hey everyone, since it's kind of related to this post, I might as well pimp one of my favorite programs: PStart (http://www.pegtop.de/start/). I use it as an app launcher for all of the portable programs on my USB drive. It can also search/launch any of the items on the start menu!

I'm a huge fan of Candy Labs' AppRocket (http://candylabs.com/approcket/). It's $18 shareware, but it works great and looks great and is extremely configurable.
And redoc: Some of us prefer to keep both of our hands on the keyboard as much as possible, which makes keyboard launchers like these a much faster alternative to even the best-organized Start menu.
