xpy is a "small tool which
disables the default threats of a Windows XP installation." When they say small they really mean it: It's under
60kb and does all of the following:
- Disable Windows "calling home"
- Disable
questionable services
- Disarm Internet Explorer
- Disarm Windows Media Player
- Remove Windows Messenger
- Improve privacy and security
- Improve performance
Not
bad for a tiny app based entirely on the
NSIS installer. xpy is
fully configurable so you can choose what you want removed removed or disabled and restore it at any time, and it also
happens to be open source.

I don't think it will be wise to turn off automatic updates unless you are 'on it' and get the updates on time yourself.
