del.icio.us bought by Yahoo!
It was only a matter of time before the crown prince of social bookmarking sites, del.icio.us, attracted the attention (and wallet) of a bigger company, and that day has arrived. del.icio.us has been bought by Yahoo!, which is an interesting move for the company which already has its own social bookmarking service, My Web 2.0. What this means for del.icio.us is hard to say at this point. Will it remain a separate product or will Yahoo! try to merge it with My Web 2.0? Will del.icio.us start allowing, and eventually requiring, Yahoo! logins as in the case of Flickr? Will Yahoo! be the first company to tag the entire web? del.icio.us lead Joshua Schachter remarks on the del.icio.us blog that Yahoo! "definitely gets social systems and their potential to change the web," and I would tend to agree, but it will be very interesting to see where this leads.[Via Boing Boing]

One thing that could seperate the fate of Flickr from that of del.icio.us is the fact that Yahoo! understands social bookmarking, as demonstrated by Yahoo!'s My Web 2.0 & My Search. Personally, I would like to see ability to cache web pages with del.icio.us. What del.icio.us users will hate is if in future Yahoo! replaces the simple ad-free UI with a cluttered UI. That will surely destroy del.icio.us. Firstly, bookmarks are more portable than photos. Secondly, community interaction of del.icio.us is much less than Flickr.

yahoo already had a photo site. http://photos.yahoo.com
i haven't noted anything different since flickr has been aquired other than an extra page since i still log in with my flickr account vs my yahoo account.
i'm hoping it'll pretty much be the same with del.icio.us. then again i do have a pro flickr account, i guess yahoo will bring on the ads now for del.icio.us

Del.icio.us currently has a great interface thats functional and easy to use. I hope that Yahoo doesn't tinker too much with a good thing. I think del.icio.us qualifies for "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" status.

In response to Philip K. Thompson's remarks, there is a new and interesting 'social bookmarking' site that just launched in August: www.jeteye.com. The additional features of user added comments and images provide a compelling alternative.
