Brian Krebs at the Washington Post alerts us to an unfortunate development at Symantec: Just three months after buying Sygate,
Symantec is killing off the company's entire product line and its support forums. Sygate Personal Firewall is an excellent free firewall product, and as an SPF user I'm a little irked, and I doubt the users who paid for their Pro products are much happier. Krebs points out that just a few weeks ago Kerio
announced the elimination of its free firewall product, and the field is growing ever smaller, but he also mentions a few possible alternatives:
ZoneAlarm,
8Signs,
Tiny Personal Firewall, and
Jetico. Anybody have a favorite free firewall that's missing from that list?

Yes - please suggest another freebie! I've been using Kerio for a couple of years now and I LOVE IT but with the support / updates going the way of the Dodo, methinks it's time for a new firewall.
Does anyone have any comments /preferences on any of the other free f.walls listed?

Well for those lookign for an excellent free anti-virus program there is the alternative of AVG. I have been using both AVG and Sygate Personal Firewall Pro. They both do a VERY good job. But now with the closing down of the Sygate line, guess it'll just be AVG for me.
AVG also has some great products you can pay for, although I find their free version for reliable.
For anyone interested, there are many reviews. One such review may be found at Cnet Download.com. Here is the full link for those interested:

And seeing as though over 90,000 people downloaded it last week alone, it must be doing something right :D.
So if you're after an alternative, i'd definately be lookign closely at AVG. Great product, and most of all, it's free!!! :D.

Yeah, I've been using AVG forever - great app. It was on their site that I learned about Kerio, which is why I'm sadenned. Apparently Grisoft has a version with a firewall in it ($50US), but I'll wait to see what others say about the above firewalls. (PS: I hate ZA.)

whilst avg might be brillint as free anti-virus apps go, what's that got to do with firewalls?
and last time i checked, the excellent 8signs (which i use) isn't a freebie, and jetico is likey to only remain free whilst it undergoes beta testing.
other options are chx-1, an even lighter app thn 8signs, however it only provides inbound security afaik, filesclab, and netveda.

Kerio, Tiny Personal Firewall, and Norton's own NIS firewall all call WRQ's AtGuard their progenitor. To this day, you cannot find a better adblocker, script blocker, cookie blocker, image blocker, or firewall product in one package. It works under Win2k, much less so under WinXP, but is clearly the inspiration (and licensed technology) of the above.
Buying a competitor to kill it off is good business, I suppose, but superior tech is not winning here.
An open-source alternative built off the AtGuard UI and principles would be ideal. There's nothing it would have to do that would require regular updates, unlike antiviral software that is signature-based.

I suggest to download a free web search tool at http://www.quintura.com before a major player buy this out and close the service down afterwards. Quintura works on "top" of major search engines and really helps to search faster.
