Google Base: It's Alive!
After keeping us waiting for eons, the gods of Google have declared that Google Base is now ready for public consumption. So go ahead and plug in your classified ads, recipes and non-profit info, and help Google destroy Craigslist, Idealist and your local newspaper in the process. Oh, and BTW, Google Base is a beta. But you already knew that.

This looks like it could turn out to be a handy service. If they can keep the spam cleaned out, and add browsing by tag/label/category, this will be a monster. Good monster, bad monster, I'm not sure. But a powerful one.

sounds like the author of this post is not a big fan of google, I am not either but I'd rather give my info because I want (read voluntarily) instead of what microsoft does, that is, steal it and take it without permission so excuse me but in other words google is asking for your data, not stealing it.

Christian-
It's not about being a fan of Google's. I'm simply pointing out a reality: Google's gain inevitably means someone else's loss. While it's not quite a zero-sum game, the fact is that dollars spent on Google, whether for advertising or other purposes, are dollars that won't be spent elsewhere. And classified listings posted on Google are ads that won't be placed elsewhere. It doesn't mean Google's doing anything wrong; they're just being competitive. Personally, I'd like to see companies like Craigslist (and even my local newspaper) survive, but the onus will really be on them to remain relevant and competitive, and if Google Base is a success, that's going to be a real challenge.
