If you asked Matt Mullenweg, progenitor of
WordPress and
Ping-o-Matic, how to eliminate the scourge of blog comment spam, he'd tell you (or so I imagine) that the solution is a smart middleman. To that end, he's introduced
Akismet, a sort of bouncer for comments and trackbacks. Once you install it on your blog (it's currently only available as a WordPress plugin, but the API is open for developers of other tools), all of your comments and trackbacks will go through Akismet, which uses collaborative filtering and, I think, a little bit of kung fu, to tell which comments are legit and which ones to trash. The service is free to individuals and even small commercial blogs and claims to have caught nearly 100,000 spams since its launch on October 25th.

Very cool! I have been looking for something like this. It's strange, I have one post on my blog about Apple switching to Intel from way back in June when Apple made the announcement, and that post gets 5 or 6 spam comments a week, but none of my other posts get any spam. Hope this helps.

I use spam karma for Wordpress and I don't have spam issues. This looks interesting too.
