Actually, never mind disc burning. The marketese in the
press release makes it sound like this is the PC-coming of
iLife. Photos, music, movies, even (duh), disc burning and backups all from one suite of apps. Roxio has combined a bunch of programs into one,
Easy Media Creator 8. Actually, there are 25 distinct apps all connected by the Media Creator Home, a sort of hub. Well, that all sounds spiffy, but the devil is in the details. It doesn't ship until later this month, so barring a magical trial copy landing on my porch tomorrow, we'll have to see what this is really like. Apparently you can order a copy now for $69.95, which is actually just a little bit cheaper than Apple's iLife. But is it better? Any multimedia app has a tough task of hiding the complexity of creating something complex like a DVD. Many bundled apps have staggered up to the challenge only to fall upon themselves from burdensome GUI's, half-baked workflows, or just plain crummy drivers. Roxio, on the other hand, has a good reputation for their stuff. I use their stuff on a daily basis, and have actually chosen it over Nero numerous times. Can't wait to see if this one really does what it says... Either way, check out the
features. It
is an impressive bulleted list, I give 'em that.

That makes like three versions in the last six months that they want me to pay for.
Wouldn't mind if half of the stuff they say it can do would actually work.
In the last year, of all of the technology related purchases I have made, none (and I mean none) have infuriated me more than my experiences with Roxio, both the product and the company.
Buggy, non-functional, non-responsive, bloat ware garbage. If you need a suite like this please look elsewhere. And before you come back with, "yes but now that Sonic bought them" comments, let me say I think this will only make things worse.
This product is a perfect example of why the software industry should begin some sort of self regulation regarding feature claims and less than ready for prime time code. A perfect example of the tech. industry's biggest caveat, "Over promising and under delivering".
If you insist on wasting your money please just send it to me instead, may I could sing you a song or cut your lawn and that would represent better value for your buck.

You've chosen it over Nero for what exactly? For its ability to keep you from accidentally making eeeevil back up copies of your licensed software distribution media? For its ability to exercise your Windows error reporting service? For its ability to slowly craft new drink coasters?

Yeah, version 6 was about as good as it ever got for Roxio. Version 7.5 is dog-slow, doesn't allow you to save burning defaults and is severely bloated. Even a minimal install is more then 500 Meg.

I miss the days when Nero was a *light-weight* (yet feature complete) alternative to Easy-CD Creator's UI/Feature bloat.
