No, Google isn't buying Sun. And Sun isn't buying Google. And Star
Office isn't going to be rebranded Google Office (at least not yet).
What was the big Google/Sun announcement we were all waiting for?
Basically, that
Sun will include the Google Toolbar as an optional part
of the downloadable Java Runtime Environment. Given that
JRE isn't exactly a hot download (when was the last time you rushed
over to Sun's site to snag the latest version?), this doesn't exactly
seem like it's going to be a huge deal for Google. Oh, the companies
also "agreed to explore opportunities to promote and enhance Sun
technologies,
like the Java Runtime Environment and the OpenOffice.org productivity
suite." So, we may just see Google Office yet. But not quite as soon as
some had imagined.

Where's that cartoony horn sound, the one that lets you know the gag was a letdown?

I wonder who thought this PR move was a good idea. You would think Google would know people have high expectations of them, and want something big if its getting hyped.
Disappointing.

Google uses a LOT of java behind the scenes. I bet they will now expose that a bit more.

I have no idea how credible this is, and it is very vague about details, but this story (link below) seems to suggest that a Google branded OO.o was, in fact, announced.

They were very vague and noncommital: "The companies didn't say how Google will deliver OpenOffice.org, or whether or when the programs will be available on Google's sites."

Did anyone else catch the question from the (I think)usatoday reporter, during the big Google/Sun announcement. she asked about "the new operating system" and the sun CEO said she must be directing this question too you referring to the google CEO, google CEO's comment was something to the effect of we are in the search engine biz, and everybody sort of giggled. Does Sun Microsystems CEO Scott McNealy know something ????
