Sun's Jonathan Schwartz has written an interesting post on his blog titled
The Value in Volume. Schwartz talks about how upgrades have been replaced by the reload button and how the traditional distribution model which Microsoft perfected and benefited most from is now out the window. The most interesting part of his post, however, is his anecdote about asking a keynote audience "
which they'd rather give up—their browser, or all
the rest of their desktop apps." Unanimously, he says, they'd all give up everything but the browser. I would do the same, without a second thought.

Until about three months ago, I think I would have had a hard time with the idea of giving up my desktop apps. I hadn't found too many AJAXy web services, and my desktop experience was just too rich to throw away. But more recently, I've seen the light. If I could only run one application on my computer, it would be Firefox.

you know, i would normally say yes...it would be a lot easier running web based apps as long as the apps were as good as office or open office, which in most cases it is. But i still have internet problems, whether it is my internet coming slower or faster or in and out, and there's still no absolute guarantee that sites will be up 24/7...like gmail was just down today for some time. So i dunno, i think i would use ajax web offices, but i would keep something on my hard drive just in case.
