Office 12's release date might still be up in the air, but at this year's Professional Developer's Conference Microsoft unveiled a handful of screenshots. If nothing else, they're interesting. Microsoft has completely ditched the menubar/toolbar interface they've stuck with for nearly 20 years. Its replacement is a series of tabs at the top of the window each of which reveals a different toolbar. It's a novel concept, but will it lead to increased productivity or frustration and hours lost to relearning? Office 12 also sports a new chrome look that matches what we've seen in Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7 screenshots.

O come on! Please no more "Microsoft rips off Apple" debates. It's aesthetics, it's a skin, it can be changed, it will be changed and when Apple bring out OS SabreTooth (or whatever other pussy-named operating system it'll be called), people will come along, skin their desktop (and Office 12) to look like a Mac and so we go around and around and around.
It's Office12. A fully integrated suite of components for word processing, spreadsheeting, contact/PIM, database, etc. It looks sweet (who cares 'what'), it has some great features, VBA will be .Net (thank you), RSS (drool!), I can insert my signature with ease (cool), thumbnail saving (beautiful), "OutlookToday" can integrate with company Intranet better (don't tell my boss ;) )
I'll be the first to stand on the plynth and say it loud: MS Office is the finest office software on the market, by far.
So bring it on MS. I'll be there upgrading from my "never failed me, never crashed, never slowed down, does what it says on the tin Office2K3" and will look forward to what you've to offer.

You guys are getting excited about a product that's over a year away and will cost several hundred dollars? Get real. OpenOffice ( http://www.openoffice.org/ ) is completely free and version 2.0 that is on par in most ways with MS Office should be released before the end of the year.
