Redirects, though occasionally warranted, usually—such as in the case of About.com's external links, for example—do little but hinder.
Redirect Remover is an extension for Firefox which solves, or at least goes a long way toward solving, this annoyance. It reads the links on pages you read and when it sees one that looks like a redirect it replaces it with a direct link.It can optionally color or otherwise format the links that it "cleans" so you know when it's working, and also features a whitelist so that some URLs—like the ones on Babelfish that look suspiciously like redirects but aren't—are left alone.

Not only are redirects an annoyance - they are (however slight) a privacy risk.
