Intel Announces New Chips

Intel today announced a revolution to its line of processors, unifying the architecture across desktop, server and mobile chips and focusing more on performance/watt instead of obsessing about speed (thank you!). All of the new CPU's will be 64-bit enabled and offer anywhere from 3x to 5x the performance/watt of anything they have currently. What does this all mean? New, better, longer lasting and smaller, more powerful computing devices, including a confirmation of a new, highly anticipated device type called a "handtop". Check out a rundown of the product introduction Intel made at their Intel Developer Forum today, and look for these chips and new devices to start popping up in the 2nd half of 2006.

If the new desktop chips have the same architecture as the current Pentium M chips, they should indeed kickass. I've long been an AMD fan, but two Dell laptops running M's in the house is starting to change my mind.

I'm pretty sure these new chips are a completely new architecture; anything else I've heard this week boast that this is bigger than any of their architecture restructurings of the past. Of course, they're supposed to say that with something like this so who knows.. I honestly haven't seen anything in detail as to how new these chips are, or how much of a removal they are from any architectures they have now. I do remember from the announcement that they're boasting 3x-5x better performance/watt than anything they have now. Either way, 2nd half of 2006 should prove to be pretty interesting.
