What's Google up to with Android?

I'm not even going to pretend to understand everything Google does. After all, like Yahoo! before it, Google is rapidly becoming something of a conglomerate, with tentacles reaching into everything from blogging to photo-editing. The latest mystery brand extension is Goog's acquisition of Android, a startup that's described as "making software for mobile phones." The deal would seem to fit into Google's mobile search plans, but even that's not clear, since the Android team is mum on what they were actually working on prior to the acquisition. One thing that's clear is that Google has bought some talent as part of the deal; Android's team includes Andy Rubin, the man behind the T-Mobile Sidekick, along with a bunch of Rubin's former colleagues from his days at WebTV. And that's about all Google's talking about right now. The official answer to questions about the deal is: "We acquired Android because of the talented engineers and great technology. We're thrilled to have them here." Somehow, I suspect there's more to it than that, and we'll find out soon enough.
