If you would like to be able to access the occasional piece of online audio or video content that is presented in Real format, but would prefer not to install RealOne with all the added "gunk" (see, I didn't say spyware!),
head on over to the BBC. They have a version of RealOne that you can download that installs the player without any additional unwanted nonsense included. Just remember to uncheck all the notification boxes during install so you don't end up getting hassled constantly by notifications you probably don't want. Isn't annoying software, well, annoying?

which download is it at that site? Is it the solaris one? and what gunk are we talking about exactly? RealPlayer never gives me any problems.

There's also a choice to download Windows Media Player for Mac OS X, is their version going to be any better or more advantageous than the standard WMP from Microsoft's site? I haven't used WMP because of all the horror stories and non-functionality I've heard about it. In case this version is better, I'd love to download and use it since playing WMV files can be frustrating (even with VLC player, Mplayer, and others)

I have always avoided RealPlayer because it's known to be loaded with adware and spyware. Unfortunately some reputable sites, such as the BBC, use it exclusively. I careful installed this version thinking I had unchecked all the boxes as recommended. It immediately tried to take over my computer and loaded it up with garbage. I have uninstalled it and edited out all references to it in the registry.

Bummer to hear, Gardiner. I have Real Alternative on my computer and unfortunately some content remains inaccessible with that. Spyware free, yes, but not exactly a fix.

the only problem with WMP, kev@#3, is that it lags and makes everything else lag
there is absolutely no issues w/ real or quicktime alternatives, but to be sure, use Media Player Classic w/ them, also at the site in the first post
