How to run Windows with no services

Okay, this probably isn't something you want to try on a machine you actually use for anything more than testing new software. But if you're curious about what it really takes to run Windows, check out this post, which shows you how to run XP with almost no system services. Could be useful if you want to try to whip up a minimal system configuration in order to run XP on an older machine (similar to this tip on running a minimal install of Win 2000), though even in this state, XP may still be too bloated for that.

I'm still trying to get the OS to stop running that CPU hog "System Idle Process". If that could be shut off, the computer would be able to spend all its time doing real useful work. ;-)

You might also check out Black Viper's list of XP services [http://dhost.info/kyeu/mirror/blackviper/WinXP/servicecfg.htm] to get a handle on what everything does and what may or may not need to be running. Pretty good site for a DIY'er.
