OS/2 to go open source?

os2Now that IBM has officially killed OS/2, users who have stuck with the OS over the years are trying to convince the company to go open source. More than 9,000 people have already signed a petition urging IBM to release the code, which reads, in part: "IBM will surely benefit from the open sourcing of OS/2 as the OS/2 Community will freely develop Open Source software as it has with BSD and Linux. IBM can take advantage of this and have less expenses on the maintenance due to contributions of developers around the world." However, word is that it's not going to happen. IBM spokesman Steve Eisenstadt, quoted by News.com, says, "we looked at it. But there were a number of third-parties involved in OS/2 over the years and decades, which means there's a tangle of legal and contractual issues. ... It's not going to happen."
