NewsGator 2.5 Outlook Edition released
Reading RSS feeds in Outlook has its advantages. Each post, like an e-mail message, can be easily forwarded or printed, saved to another application like OneNote or EverNote, and indexed and searched by any desktop search utility. While there are a number of options for doing this, NewsGator has always been my favorite tool for aggregating RSS into Outlook.
NewsGator 2.5 Outlook Edition was released today. This is not the version that adds synchronization with FeedDemon, the outstanding standalone RSS reader created by Nick Bradbury that NewsGator recently acquired - that's coming later this summer. Version 2.5 is a performance release, offering the following enhancements:
- Status Synchronization: Read/Unread/Delete status of posts are synced.
- Folder Synchronization: Folder structure is synchronized with NG Web Edition
- International Support: French, German, Dutch, the list goes on.
- Subscription Plan: Subscribe monthly as well as annually
The improved synchronization is a long-awaited improvement for subscribers to any of the growing number of NewsGator Online premium packages (a basic NewsGator Online account is still free). This release follows the recent announcement of podcast support using FeedStation - a utility application bundled with FeedDemon to manage and download your podcast subscriptions.

To bad that it's not free, you need to get a business account to make it work.

Whisky: True but they are offering a free subscription to current license holders to take the sting off this change in their business model (except for current premium plan subscribers like me who continue on as before).
I know there are free RSS alternatives but NewsGator offers a lot of value for me, especially with the newly improved synchronization. I can read anywhere (inside Outlook, on my Treo using NG Mobile, at another computer using NG Web) and the state of what I've read is kept up-to-date. That plus the premium content and customized searches are worth the $6 per month I pay.
With the added bonus of a synchronized copy of FeedDemon (soon) and FeedStation to assist with my podcast subs, I think this is a lot of bang for the buck. YMMV.

I've been using RSS Popper for a while. It's a good Outlook RSS aggregator that doesn't require a subscription--or even a login--at all.
